Creative Director → Executive Creative Director · Philadelphia / NYC

The case studies are the résumé.
This page is everything else.

Twenty years in. I designed a sign system for Walmart's brand change, set the standard for an agency's digital work, directed Toyota's Colorado shoots, and led teams at Campbell Ewald and Zeno. I've never held the title Executive Creative Director. I solve the problem in front of me: a shower karaoke booth, a Reels feed, a wall of booger glue. Then I lead it.

HOW I WORK

On Toyota's Colorado work, the brief was a broadcast spot, and the default was to stay in broadcast. I planned one shoot to also feed print and vertical video built for phones, with no second shoot. People don't owe a brand their attention. You reward it with something short, then something else, until the big one lands.
Don't expect attention. Reward it.

BEFORE THE TITLES.

My first brand job was at Happy Harry's, a Delaware drugstore chain that became Walgreens. I stocked shelves, ran the register, and made the signs by hand with markers. Years later I designed a sign system for Walmart's brand change.
I helped pay for college with odd jobs: landscaping, the warehouses at Agway and Southern States, and washing airplanes down to the wing chrome.

Dad of three. I taught all three to skateboard. I solve problems everywhere: hydroponic tomatoes and peppers, a carbureted '07 Triumph, a '52 Chevy pickup I tinkered on until the kids came. Someday, a tree house.

Drum major, high school soccer captain and all-state player, first-chair sax. I met my wife in the marching band. I still write my own music.

The snapshot skips the numbers.
The résumé doesn't.

My family is moving to the Philadelphia area. I'm looking for a permanent Senior, Group or Executive Creative Director seat, in Philly or New York. I spent four years at Saatchi in New York, so the train in doesn't scare me. If you've read this far, you know how I work. Let's talk.

THE SMALLER JOBS

Close-up of the Vicks print ad: an open booklet with a campus map on one side and a man's face in profile on the other, a stretched string of booger spanning the fold between them.

VICKS
Vicks wanted a college flu-season ad. The room went for the obvious joke. I stayed late, built the ad out of real booger glue, and put it on the wall. National Addy.

Cartoon characters on a city car-dealership street: Uncle Sam with an eye patch, a green inflatable tube man, and a pink gorilla in headphones carrying an orange cassette player.

TOYOTA · PORTLAND
My writer and I came up with the characters. I sketched them, and an illustrator brought them to life. The pink gorilla is my grade-school teacher in a Halloween costume.

Screen from the Smack Talk microsite: a "Select a Slam" panel of six helmeted player previews beside a football player with a question mark on his helmet.

MADDEN 11 · P&G
Social wasn't in the brief. Smack Talk was my idea: a microsite for insulting your friends, and a Walmart.com page that turned them into buyers. My team built both. It was reused for later Madden launches.

The Mess Kit toy box: two ketchup bottles in gun holsters and three pairs of safety goggles, on a yellow background.

TIDE · P&G
The client asked for a blogger kit. A box of product seemed weak, so I made the mess the fun part. Ketchup in a gun holster, because ketchup was an approved stain.
